It has been a great summer so far!
By McKenna Christy
As a girl from Ohio (O-H… okay, never mind), making the journey to New York City was daunting. I had no idea if I could manage the hustle and bustle. However, I was more anxious about starting my ASME internship at The Pioneer Woman Magazine.
I arrived confident in my work ethic, but the glitz and glam of the NYC magazine scene made me wonder if I would be good enough for my dream career.
The day before my internship, I did a test run of the route from my lovely NYU dorm to Hearst Tower. It was then time to prepare for the big first day. On said big first day – June 3 – I rode the subway with my roommate from Ohio University (hi, Alyssa!). Butterflies flew around my stomach as I thought about the upcoming impression I was about to make on my new editors and team for the summer. Most fortunately, I ran into fellow ASME intern Ethan Beck, who is interning at HGTV Magazine and Food Network Magazine this summer, in the lobby of Hearst Tower.
Ethan and I took to the elevator, discussed our nerves, and pressed the floor number of our office. We were greeted by welcoming members across the office’s three brands, and on my desk sat a welcome note, past Pioneer Woman print issues, and a delicious muffin.
My first ever task as an intern was to read through The Pioneer Woman Magazine issues. Although I made sure to read much of the work published on and by The Pioneer Woman before starting my internship, holding and reading through the print issues created a deeper appreciation and understanding of what the publication consistently provides to its readers.
I quickly learned I was in a supportive, creative, and collaborative environment. Over the past five weeks, I have had some exciting assignments. From working on a print story for the 2024 holiday/winter edition of The Pioneer Woman Magazine, sitting in on meetings with talented editors, writing digital stories, and researching for other print spreads, I have learned much more than I thought I would have the opportunity to. I have also become a more confident student journalist and person, which I have my editors to thank.
During my summer in NYC and as an editorial intern, I have met and connected with gifted interns and professionals. Those people have convinced me that magazine journalism is the path I want to pursue after graduating in 2025.
My parting note is that anyone would be lucky to intern at The Pioneer Woman Magazine, and I am grateful to have this experience. Also, when looking for an editorial internship or completing one, I recommend always having a positive attitude and staying genuine to yourself and others through the process. What you put into something is what you get out of it.
